Sharpening Questions and Answers
How do I know if my tools need to be sharpened?
The best way to know if you tools need to be sharpened is by paying attention to how well they are cutting. If your finding yourself pushing material through your table saw more than you did when it was new or previously sharpened, it is a safe bet that is needs to be re-sharpened. A good idea to allow you to gage how long you can use a tool before sharpening is to track its usage. This will give you a rough idea as to how long you can use a tool before it needs to be re-sharpened.
Can I use any saw blade on any machine?
No. There are many different configurations and different styles of blades that are to be used on specific machines for specific purposes. Many of your common table saw blades should have a positive face hook. There are table saw blades, which do have a negative face hook that are designed for cutting special materials such as corian or melamine. Whereas a blade that is designed for a mitre saw, has a negative or zero face hook.
How many times can a saw blade be sharpened before it needs to be replaced?
The number of times a saw blade can be re-sharpened before it needs to be replaced depends on the usage that the saw blade goes through. If the saw blade is only used occasionally on weekends or for side projects, it may be a few years before it needs to be replaced. If there saw blade is used on a daily basis for production work the blade can easily be re-sharpened for at least a year before being replaced. For example, a customer has us re-sharpen a blade about every 2 weeks. They are currently going a year or more before they need to replace that saw blade.
